Strength for Today: Honoring God with Every Rep

“Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” Ephesians 6:10

There is something sacred about movement. When we lift, stretch, breathe, and press through, not just for ourselves but as an act of worship, we begin to experience what it means to be strong in the Lord. Just as our worship should be more than rituals, our workouts can become more than repetitions and routines; they can become opportunities to glorify God with the bodies He has entrusted to us.

Too often, exercise is seen as a chore. But what if we reframed it as a divine invitation? What if every rep, every step, every breath was a way of saying, “Thank You, Lord, for this body and the strength You give me to move it”?

We were created to honor God with our whole being, spirit, mind, and body. When we place emphasis on Him during our workouts, it becomes a supernatural expression of who we were designed to be.

“For in Him we live and move and have our being.” – Acts 17:28

Each day is a fresh gift, a new beginning and another chance to grow stronger in every way. Yet many people don’t see the need to move. Some may not realize that caring for the body is a sacred responsibility. We are stewards of these earthly temples.

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19–20

I remember a time when I was especially weak. I had just undergone my second open-heart surgery to repair three holes in my heart. The doctors told me to wait six weeks before returning to physical activity. But at just four weeks post-op, I felt an urgency, not from pride, but from purpose. No cardiac rehab was recommended, so I created my own: strength training. Slowly and prayerfully, I returned to teaching my fitness classes.

It was hard, really hard. My sternum had been cut and cracked open. Each rep hurt, especially the overhead press. But I made myself teach because I knew it was the only way I could fully recover. My students cheered me on. I prayed every class:
“Lord, give me the strength and endurance to run this race with excellence.”

And He did. And He still does.

Your body will do what you allow it to do. If you don’t move, you lose what the Lord has given you. When we fail to care for our bodies, they begin to decay far faster than we realize.

Strength training is so much more than a physical workout. It renews the spirit, sharpens the mind, and strengthens the body in five distinct ways:

Strengthens the Spirit
Each rep can be an act of worship when offered to God. Our obedience in stewarding our health becomes a form of spiritual discipline.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, this is your true and proper worship.”  Romans 12:1

Renews the Mind
Strength training improves mental clarity and focus, lowers stress, and uplifts our mindset.
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.” – Isaiah 26:3 (NIV)
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:2

Builds Endurance through Trials
Just as we press through tough workouts, we also build spiritual and emotional endurance.
“We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” – Romans 5:3–4

Supports a Joyful Mindset
Physical movement is a God-designed tool to uplift and sustain joy.
“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” – Proverbs 17:22

Fuels Gratitude and Purpose
Daily movement reminds us of God’s faithfulness and awakens thankfulness in our hearts.
“This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” – Psalm 118:24

One of the greatest blessings of strength training is doing it in community with like-minded believers. There’s something deeply encouraging about exercising alongside others who not only want to build physical strength but also desire to grow spiritually. We cheer one another on, share scriptures, pray before we begin, and remind each other that we’re not alone on this journey.

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17

We were made to move in His strength. It’s not about how much weight you lift or how many steps you take, it’s about who you are honoring with each one.

So today, and every day, move forward in faith. One rep, one prayer, one breath at a time. Let your strength be found in Him.
