Picking the Right Horse

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.,

Hebrews 12:1-2

The first Saturday every May for one hundred and fifty years, the Kentucky Derby has been a spectacular event showcasing the beauty of Kentucky to the world. While never a gambler, or a Mint Julep fan, the beauty, power, and majesty of thoroughbred horses has been a great love of mine since childhood. In honor of the 150th running of the Debry, I thought it interesting to take this year’s list of horses and allow God to help build a column to also honor Him.

When we are children it is hard to see ourselves ever getting old, we feel FOREVER YOUNG. As we age and experience the FIERCENESS of our bodies aging, our perspective changes. These changes can be physical, spiritual, and mental, impacting our activities, our compassion for others, and our way of looking at the world, along with the hereafter. It takes a certain RESILIENCE not to allow the aging process to totally paralyze a person, keeping them from realizing the purpose God planned for them before they were even born.

Even America is feeling the effects of aging. CATCHING FREEDOM is one thing, keeping it, quite another. It has been an EPIC RIDE, but we must call on Jesus as our un-COMMON DEFENSE, to take down the demonic STRONGHOLD destroying our nation! JUST A TOUCH of Jesus can heal the sick, make the lame walk, and help the blind to see. Jesus can heal us from our greatest in number, gross DOMESTIC PRODUCT, our SIN!

After a hard morning workout, or in fact, just about any time, the horses love the brush rubbing down the muscles, relaxing their bodies, and starting the recovery. We know God is love, but He also knows we will have our best life when we are living within His boundaries and walking within our purpose. That means sometimes He will need to turn the washcloth over to the rough side to scrub off the deep-down dirt we have been ENDLESSLY wallowing in. But that doesn’t mean He loves us less, in fact, He is demonstrating how much He loves us!

That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, and healed all the sick. Matthew 8:16

If you think I exaggerate about America, and much of the Western World, consider these comments from Richard Dawkins. You ask, “Who is Richard Dawkins?” Dawkins wrote the book, “The God Delusion,” and stands at the tip-top of the Atheist food chain. He has said some very controversial things like “Faith is one of the world’s great evils, comparable to the smallpox virus but harder to eradicate.”

Recently, Dawkins has been heard ponying up to the trough of verbal restraint, or at least putting the saddle on the horse. Dawkins has admitted that he is concerned with the decline of Christianity in the Western World. He even described himself as a “cultural Christian”. Fancy that, sounds like he could even be on a church membership roll!

Let’s face facts, the very foundation of the laws and institutions in our culture are built upon Biblical teachings and the Ten Commandments. Dawkins is admitting there has been a significant decline in the family unit, equal justice, self-control, and the effects are pounding our society into oblivion. You just can’t go into a store and steal anything you want and not expect ramifications. And businesses are somewhat complicit by calling the theft “shrinkage” but then closing the store. This is happening in major US cities across the country.

Dawkins in an interview told a British talk radio station, “I call myself a cultural Christian. I’m not a believer…And so you know, I love hymns and Christmas carols, and I sort of feel at home in the Christian ethos..” Sounds like Dawkins is in the starting gate, where are you in your race?

I grew up in Thoroughbred Acres, where street names are Kentucky Derby winners. My home was on Venetian Way the 1960 Kentucky Derby winner. This horse had unwavering determination and embodied the spirit of a true champion. His Derby race time was a record for twenty years. He was in it to win it!

Can you imagine calling yourself a “cultural thoroughbred”? “It is simply an honor to be in the Kentucky Derby, no matter if I win or lose.” Huh? Yet, some of us just go through the motions of going to church and never realizing the blessing in being a “true believer.” Sacrifice and get up early for a morning workout in the Word. You will be blessed. Don’t know where to start? Read the Book of John and then read the rest of the New Testament.

Whether you are riding in from ENCINO, WEST SARATOGA, or even SIERRA LEONE, Jesus is the way to get where you want to go, the finish line! There is NO MORE TIME, it’s 10 o’clock on a school night and final exams are in the morning. Who are you going to trust on your ride to eternal life, some hellion horse named HADES?

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
