Falling into God’s Rhythm

“Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.” — Proverbs 3:6 (NLT)

There’s a rhythm to walking with God—a steady, unforced flow that moves us in harmony with His perfect timing. When we learn to fall into God’s rhythm, our lives align with His heartbeat instead of our own hurried pace. It’s in that surrender where we find true peace, purpose, and power.

Recently, I was a guest on the podcast Say Yes to God. The host asked me what saying “Yes” to God has meant in my life. Without hesitation, I said, “It means total surrender.” Saying Yes to God means laying down my will, my way, my intentions, and my selfish desires. It means choosing His way even when it interrupts my plans or challenges my comfort zone.

When I said Yes, I wasn’t just agreeing to serve Him when it felt convenient. I was handing Him the pen and saying, “Lord, You write my story.” That simple Yes set me on a lifelong journey of learning to listen for His rhythm in every step I take—spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

Saying Yes to God also means I sometimes have to say “No, thank you” to others. People have great intentions and will often invite me into their latest wellness challenge, ministry opportunity, or project that sounds exciting and good. But I’ve learned that good doesn’t always mean God-ordained for me. In fact, I could be taking the place meant for someone else.

There were times I said yes to things that seemed right but weren’t what God wanted for me in that season. When I didn’t pause to pray first, I ended up backpedaling—trying to gracefully step out of situations I was never meant to step into in the first place.

Jesus modeled this so perfectly. “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” (Mark 1:35, NLT)
Even Jesus, the Son of God, withdrew to seek the Father’s will before making decisions. How much more do we need that time of quiet alignment before we say yes or no?

When we go to God first—for everything—He gives us that inner knowing. The Holy Spirit nudges our hearts, confirming when something is a divine Yes or a protective No. Romans 8:14 reminds us, “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.” His children are never meant to be driven by pressure, guilt, or people-pleasing. We’re called to move to the rhythm of His Spirit, not the applause of others.

If you’re a people pleaser like I sometimes am, it’s hard to turn down invitations, especially from people you like and respect. But saying Yes to God means trusting that His plan is better than pleasing people. When I align with His will, I find that my steps feel lighter, my schedule less chaotic, and my mind more peaceful.

Psalm 37:23 says, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” Isn’t that incredible? God delights in every detail—the workouts we plan, the conversations we have, the quiet moments we spend in His presence. When we move in sync with Him, our lives become a reflection of divine balance and order.

Just like in fitness, rhythm is key. If you move too fast or too slow, you risk injury or burnout. But when you follow the right rhythm—one led by the Holy Spirit—you build strength, endurance, and grace in every movement.

Try this as a physical reminder: go for a walk while focusing on your breathing and the sound of your footsteps. With each step, whisper a prayer like, “Lord, lead me.” Let your body and spirit find rhythm together in His presence. That’s worship in motion.

Take time this week to pause before every new commitment. Ask, “Father, is this part of Your plan for me right now?” Then wait and listen. His answer might come as peace—or as uneasiness warning you to slow down. Either way, His rhythm will never lead you wrong.

Father, thank You for showing me how to fall into Your rhythm. Forgive me for the times I’ve rushed ahead or lagged behind. Teach me to move in step with Your Spirit, to say Yes when You call and No when You protect. Help me live surrendered—trusting that Your rhythm will always lead me where I’m meant to go.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Start your day this week by stretching your body and praying Proverbs 3:6 aloud. As you reach toward the heavens, imagine releasing your own plans and embracing God’s divine rhythm. Walk in peace, breathe deeply, and trust that when you say Yes to Him first, everything else will fall beautifully into place.
