“Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”
Luke 2:49
It’s a parent’s worst nightmare, you’re out in public, talking, maybe just browsing for a moment, and suddenly, your child is gone. That familiar comfort of their presence is replaced by an instant panic. Your heart begins to pound, your breath shortens, and your mind runs to every possible scenario. You drop everything and begin a frantic search, calling out their name, praying with every step.
I remember a moment like that all too well. Years ago, while shopping with one of my children in a department store, I turned around and realized they were no longer beside me. My heart jumped. You know, “that sickening wave of fear.” Scanning the aisles one by one, calling their name louder and louder, my calm voice quickly giving way to desperation. It felt like forever, though it was probably only a few minutes. Finally, I found them sitting cross-legged in the children’s book section, completely absorbed in a picture book, as if nothing else in the world mattered.
Relief flooded me—but so did conviction. While I was frantic, they were focused. In that moment, I realized how often I do the same thing in my spiritual walk—I panic, I fear, I assume God is missing… all the while, He’s right where He’s supposed to be, calmly working, waiting, and inviting me to trust Him more deeply.
In Luke chapter 2, Mary and Joseph experienced the same panic. After attending the Passover Festival in Jerusalem, they began their journey home, assuming Jesus was among the travelers. But when they realized He was missing, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for Him for three long days. Finally, they found Him—twelve years old, sitting among the teachers in the temple, listening, asking questions, and speaking with deep wisdom.
“Why were you searching for Me?” Jesus asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be about My Father’s business?” (Luke 2:49)
Even as a child, Jesus knew who He was and what He was called to do. He wasn’t wandering off—He was walking in obedience. He was about His Father’s business.
That simple phrase still stirs my heart today. What does it really mean for us to be about our Father’s business?
In John 6:38, Jesus said, “For I have come down from heaven not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” He lived every moment with divine purpose—listening to the Father, loving people, teaching truth, healing hearts, and ultimately laying down His life in obedience.
If we are followers of Christ, then we are called to do the same.
Romans 12:11 encourages us to “never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” That’s what the Father’s business is about serving Him in whatever season or setting we’re placed in. It could be ministry, motherhood, marriage, mentoring, or the marketplace. It’s less about location and more about devotion.
Colossians 3:23 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Whether folding laundry, teaching a class, preparing a meal, or leading a Bible study—if we do it for God’s glory, we are in His business.
The problem is, we often drift. Like Mary and Joseph, we assume Jesus is “somewhere nearby,” only to realize later that we’ve left Him behind in our daily hustle. We don’t mean to, but distractions creep in, and soon our own agendas outweigh His will.
Proverbs 3:5–6 brings us back: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
If you feel like you’ve lost your way or lost sight of what truly matters, it’s not too late to return. Jesus is never far. He’s right where He’s always been—ready to guide, speak, and stir our hearts again.
So today, let’s refocus. Let’s recommit to being about our Father’s business—not just in the big things, but in the daily choices. Let’s ask Him to show us where He’s working—and join Him there.
Because in the end, nothing else will matter as much as walking in obedience to the One who gave it all for us.
It is a choice in the way we live: Are we reflexive or intentional? Reacting emotionally or spiritually? In God’s business, or everyone else’s business?
Even disciples are human.
In John 21:21-22 we read, When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”
This exchange happens after Jesus reinstates Peter and gives him a glimpse of how he will die. Jesus essentially tells Peter to stay focused on his own calling. “What is that to you? You must follow me.”
What a powerful reminder to stay in our lane and trust God with other people’s journeys.
Father, help me to live every day about Your business. Open my eyes to Your will and give me courage to follow it fully. Keep me from distraction and draw me close to Your heart. May everything I do bring glory to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
